The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and anyone who lived here when Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida in 2022 knows how fast a storm can change things. Your gutters, soffit and fascia are part of your home's first line of defense against wind-driven rain. This checklist covers what to do before the season, right before a storm and after it passes. Use it as a starting point, then adjust for your home and trees.

Key takeaways

  • Clean gutters and downspouts before the season so they can handle heavy rain.
  • Check hangers, slope, fascia and soffit while the weather is calm.
  • Never climb a ladder in high wind or right before a storm.
  • After a storm, inspect from the ground and document damage with photos.

Why gutters matter during tropical storms

Tropical storms bring a lot of rain, often sideways. Clogged or loose gutters overflow, and that water ends up against your walls, foundation and fascia.

Loose gutters can also become a hazard in high wind. A section that pulls away can damage the roof edge, windows or anything below it.

Soffit and fascia matter too. Damaged soffit panels can let wind-driven rain and pests into the attic, and soft fascia gives gutters nothing solid to hold on to.

Before the season

Late spring is the best time to get ready, before the rainy season and hurricane season overlap.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Remove leaves, palm debris, pine needles and tile grit. Flush downspouts to make sure water runs freely. If you would rather not climb, our gutter cleaning service covers gutters and downspouts.

Check hangers

Look for sections that sag, pull away from the fascia or move when touched. Loose hangers should be tightened or replaced.

Check slope

Standing water after rain means the gutter may not be sloped correctly toward the downspout. That is usually a gutter repair job.

Inspect fascia and soffit

Look for peeling paint, dark stains, soft spots, sagging or missing soffit panels. Damaged soffit should be fixed before storms. See our soffit installation and repair page.

Extend downspouts and trim branches

  • Make sure downspouts discharge away from the foundation.
  • Trim branches that hang over the roof or touch gutters.
  • Clear debris from around ground-level drains.

Do a quick water test while you are at it. Run a garden hose into each gutter run and watch where the water goes. It should flow steadily to the downspout and come out freely at the bottom, without dripping from seams or corners.

Write down anything that needs attention and handle repairs in calm weather. Fixing a loose section in May is far easier than chasing it in September.

Right before a storm

When a storm is forecast, focus on safe, ground-level tasks.

What's safe to do

  • Secure loose downspout extensions or bring them inside.
  • Move outdoor furniture and items that could blow into gutters.
  • Clear ground drains you can reach without a ladder.
  • Take photos of your roofline and gutters for your records.

What to leave to pros

Reattaching gutters, roof edge work and anything at height is best handled by a professional, well before the weather turns.

Never climb in high wind

Ladders and wind do not mix. If gusts have started, stay on the ground. No gutter is worth a fall.

After the storm

Once it is safe to go outside, walk around the house and look up. Watch for downed power lines and stay away from them.

Signs of damage

  • Gutters sagging, bent or pulled away from the fascia.
  • Downspouts loose, crushed or missing.
  • Missing or hanging soffit panels.
  • Stains or water marks on walls below the gutters.
  • Debris piled in gutters or on the roof edge.

Photos for your records

Take clear photos from several angles before anything is moved or repaired. Many homeowners keep these for insurance purposes. We do not give legal or insurance advice, so check with your insurer about what they need.

When to call a pro

Call a professional if gutters are hanging, fascia looks damaged or soffit panels are missing. Damaged systems sometimes need full gutter replacement rather than patching.

We help homeowners across Fort Myers, Punta Gorda and nearby cities. If you are not sure how often to clean before next season, read how often to clean gutters in Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

It also helps to schedule work early. Contractor calendars fill up quickly once a storm is in the forecast and again after it passes. Booking your inspection and cleaning in late spring gives you time to handle any repairs calmly.

If you are planning bigger changes, like upsizing gutters or replacing old fascia, the off-season is the best window. Work done in calm weather goes faster and gives you peace of mind before the next storm.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I clean my gutters before hurricane season?

Late spring is ideal, before the rainy season starts and well before peak storm activity. Homes with heavy tree cover may need another cleaning mid-season.

Should I remove my gutters before a hurricane?

No. Properly attached gutters should stay in place. Focus on keeping them clean and securely fastened before the season.

Is it safe to clean gutters right after a storm?

Wait until the weather has fully cleared, and check for downed lines and damaged roof edges first. If gutters are damaged or hanging, leave the work to a professional.
